EN 40 Light Pole Standards

EN 40 is a European series of standards covering lighting columns. It provides a common framework for terminology, dimensions, loads, structural design, materials and conformity. Because requirements and national adoptions can change, buyers should state the exact applicable edition and project location in procurement documents.

What does the EN 40 series cover?

The series is divided into parts addressing general definitions and terms, dimensions and tolerances, surface protection, load determination, structural verification and requirements for columns made from specific materials. The relevant combination depends on the pole material and project specification.

Why project location matters

Wind data, terrain, topography, safety factors and national annex requirements may vary. A statement that a pole is “EN 40 compliant” is not enough without the design basis, pole configuration and attachments.

Do not approve a pole solely by height and base diameter. Changing the luminaire, arm, banner or solar panel can invalidate the original structural check. Likewise, wind-speed values from a different code should not be transferred without engineering conversion.
