Coastal Corrosion Protection for Light Poles

Coastal environments expose light poles to salt-laden air, high humidity, wind-driven rain and frequent wet-dry cycles. Material selection is important, but long-term durability also depends on finish quality, drainage, fasteners, electrical details and maintenance.

Why coastal corrosion is demanding

Salt deposits attract moisture and increase electrical conductivity on exposed surfaces. Crevices, damaged coatings and areas that remain wet can deteriorate faster. Actual severity depends on distance from the shoreline, prevailing wind, splash exposure, temperature and maintenance.

Selecting the pole material

Aluminum

Aluminum forms a natural oxide layer and performs well in many outdoor applications. Alloy selection, anodizing or coating, ground-line protection and isolation from dissimilar metals should be specified for the exposure.

Stainless steel

Stainless steel can provide strong corrosion resistance and a distinctive appearance, but the correct grade and surface finish are essential. Chloride exposure can cause localized corrosion if the material or detailing is unsuitable.

Carbon steel

Galvanizing and compatible coating systems can protect carbon-steel poles. Cut edges, weld areas, damaged coating and trapped moisture require particular attention.

Finishing options

  • Anodizing: creates a controlled oxide layer on aluminum and can provide an architectural appearance.
  • Powder coating: offers color choice and a protective barrier when pretreatment and application are correct.
  • Duplex systems: combine metallic protection and an organic topcoat for selected steel applications.
  • Passivation and finishing: help maintain suitable stainless-steel surface condition.

  • Provide drainage and avoid water traps
  • Seal or protect crevices where required

  • Keep soil, mulch and standing water away from vulnerable base details

Inspection and maintenance

Wash salt deposits at intervals appropriate to the site, especially in sheltered areas that receive little rain. Inspect bases, doors, fasteners, welds, coating damage and electrical openings. Repair damage using a compatible system before corrosion spreads beneath the finish.
